General Summary/Purpose

The Research Program Assistant II works for the Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health as part of its Behavioral Health team.  This is a full-time position.  This position works together with the Center’s field and Baltimore-based research team to assist in the delivery of field-based public health services.  This position will be based in Whiteriver, AZ. * Please note, this position is anticipated to end on 10/31/2018.*

The Center has a mission to work in partnership with American Indian tribes to raise the health status and self-sufficiency of American Indian people to the highest possible level. This mission is accomplished through three core activities: 1) research, 2) service, and 3) training. The goals of the Center projects are to develop, implement and evaluate projects aimed at improving health status for Native American families and communities. 

This project will evaluate the Family Spirit Nurture home-based curriculum delivered between pregnancy and 18 months post-partum. Outcomes focus on: 1) the impact of home-based lessons on how and what mothers feed their infants/toddlers; 2) child diet and physical activity; 3) child weight/ status (age and sex specific BMI z-scores); 4) maternal psychosocial and household environment factors; and 5) biologic measures tied to obesity risks.

Project activities include family-based outreach and education, travel to local homes by car and program implementation and evaluation document completion. 

Brief summary of duties and qualifications:

Specific Duties/Responsibilities

  • Attend community meetings to represent the project and maintain contacts with community partners.
  • Recruit eligible study participants and administer informed consent.
  • Provide referrals to appropriate community resources.
  • Provide transportation for participants to prenatal and well baby visits.
  • Travel to and conduct home-based lessons between 28 weeks gestation and 18 months postpartum.  Lesson topics may include: healthy infant/toddler diet and physical activity; healthy food/beverage availability; complementary feeding and responsive parenting practices; maternal emotional health; safe play spaces in the home environment.
  • Collect data from participants, which may include some or all of the following: interview data; self-report data; observational data in the home; health specimen collections.
  • Review data for document accuracy and processing as needed.
  • Work with the rest of project team on duties related to the general conduct of the program and evaluation and participate in staff meetings to review project goals and progress.
  • Attend field-based trainings and meetings (travel required).
  • Update program logs and maintain up-to-date data entry records as needed.
  • Assist with the other Center-wide programmatic duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Two years of related experience
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

* JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *

Technical qualifications or specialized certifications

  • Current driver’s license issued by the state of residence and good driving record required
  • This position will maintain background clearance as required by the employer and any collaborating agencies

Any specific physical requirements for the job

  • Ability to travel with overnight stays required as needed.  Some evening and weekend work may be required.
  • This position will require interaction with community health care providers and other hospital/clinic staff and therefore may require frequent trips to and time spent at the community health clinics and hospitals
