Since 2010, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation has supported the development, implementation, evaluation and readiness for dissemination of the Center’s “Feast for the Future” initiative. Feast for the Future’s goal is to increase access to healthy foods and improve nutrition, and is currently being carried out in partnership with three tribes – Santo Domingo Pueblo, White Mountain Apache and Navajo. It is a multi-pronged effort that includes 1) edible school gardens, 2) the creation of community farms and gardens, 3) a “traditional foodways” curriculum specific to each tribe taught by farmers and elders to children, 4) Native farmer outreach and training to increase access to fresh produce, and 5) the development and spinoff of a mobile grocery store (“MoGro”) to help provide access to nutritious foods and produce to rural tribal communities.
