The Indian Health Service and the National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health have a joint partnership supporting the Native American Research Centers for Health (NARCH). Since 2003, the NARCH initiative has supported a partnership between the White Mountain Apache Tribe and the Center to conduct intensive academic-level behavioral health research. This funding mechanism has supported the development, implementation and evaluation of programs spanning multiple behavioral health arenas including suicide, self-injury and substance use prevention as well as STI and HIV/AIDS risk reduction. Within the White Mountain Apache community, the NARCH research infrastructure has core components of local capacity building, research training and faculty development, and a multi-tiered community-based approach to reducing behavioral health disparities.
